The context of drinking plays an important role in the occurrence of alcohol-related harm, particularly as a result of alcohol intoxication. Alcohol consumption can have an impact not only on the incidence of diseases, injuries and other health conditions, but also on their outcomes and how these evolve over time. Addiction to alcohol and the illegal use of drugs are treated differently under the ADA. Addiction to alcohol is generally considered a disability whether the use of alcohol is in the present or in the past.

New Jersey has the second-lowest number of alcohol-related deaths per capita (Utah has the lowest). New Hampshire has the nation’s lowest rate of under-21 alcohol-related deaths. Mississippi has a high rate of under-21 alcohol-related deaths and the second-highest rate of deaths from acute causes. Maine has one of the nation’s lowest rates of under-21 alcohol-related deaths.

Other housing, like half-way houses, serve people who are on probation, some of whom have addictions. Often staff of housing programs refuse to admit people who take medication prescribed to treat their substance use disorders, even if they are required to live there while on probation. If a person stats on alcoholism is prescribed medication to treat a substance use disorder, the ADA and/or the Fair Housing Act may require housing programs to admit the individual. The ADA also requires that state-funded housing provide “reasonable modifications” to individuals with disabilities, including those in recovery.

Looking into specific drinking patterns, a 2012 study also found that lower-income households are more likely to either not drink at all or have heavy drinking episodes. Higher-income households are more likely to drink lighter amounts of alcohol more frequently. Binge drinking involves having five or more drinks on one occasion in the past month for males or four drinks for females. Heavy alcohol use involves binge drinking on five or more days in the past month. Young adults report the highest rates of binge drinking and heavy alcohol use. How Social Security Evaluates Drug and Alcohol Abuse (DAA)

Some of those people have qualified for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA). But Social Security can’t find you disabled based solely on a diagnosis of chronic alcoholism. While alcoholism is not grounds for an approval in and of itself, the effects of alcoholism can lead to an approval. The SSA uses a document called the Listing of Impairments, sometimes referred to as “the Blue Book,” to help guide its determinations. The Listing is effectively a large catalog of different medical problems, all of which have condition-specific severity standards. If a claimant matches or equals the Listing’s standards for his or her medical issue, he or she could be considered severely disabled, and could therefore be granted a monthly disability award.

Of the adolescents currently using alcohol, approximately 4.2 million (11.1%) reported binge drinking, while 825,000  (2.2%) reported heavy alcohol use. Years ago, you could qualify for Social Security disability benefits if you were an alcoholic. Since then, alcohol addiction has actually become a hurdle to obtaining disability benefits. In a nutshell, you can’t get Social Security disability benefits based on alcoholism.
